About the event

Join Laura Daniels and Eric Schulz at Heartwood Farm for a pasture walk exploring how thoughtful grazing management can improve both productivity and conservation. Home to 60 cow-calf pairs, Heartwood Farm is in its second season using Gallagher eShepherd virtual fence technology. While the technology is new, Laura brings 21 years of grazing experience, previously with Jersey dairy cattle. Participants will discuss converting crop ground into productive grazing through diverse forage establishment, using targeted grazing to improve pastures and wooded areas, and managing grasslands with nesting bird habitat in mind. Featured topics will include plans to integrate prescribed fire into silvopasture and managed woodlands alongside grazing as a long-term land management strategy, as well as how virtual fencing supports intensive rotational grazing while creating exclusion zones to protect wetlands, waterways, and other environmentally sensitive areas.

  • Professionals from Pheasants Forever, Sand County Foundation, and more will be on site to answer your grazing and prescribed fire questions.

  • Snacks and drinks will be provided at the beginning and end of the tour. If you would like water while on the tour, please bring your own water bottle. A port-a-potty will also be available at the beginning and end of the event.

  • The tour will include some steep terrain and uneven surfaces, please wear good hiking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.

  • This event is occurring on private property, attendees will be provided with the exact address upon registration.
