About the event
The Empire-Sauk Chapter of The Prairie Enthusiasts is offering basic training for those interested in prescribed fire. This 1-day class is for people without previous experience in prescribed fire or who want a refresher. The training will follow the guidelines of the Wisconsin Prescribed Fire Council. Successful participation in this training, plus attending a field training session, plus helping on two TPE burns as an apprentice, provides qualifications to be a new crew member on TPE burns.
This class is also appropriate for landowners wishing to learn more details about how prescribed burns are conducted.
Class taught by Rob Baller, Scott Fulton, Andy Sleger, and Rob Schubert of The Prairie Enthusiasts.
Bring your own sack lunch. The class will be indoors and consist of PowerPoint lectures and video.
Main topics addressed:
•Why we burn
•Fire behavior – fuels, weather, topography
•Ignition techniques
•Suppression techniques
•Safety on the fire line
•Crew roles & next steps
A separate field training will be held in early March at a site to be determined.
